Part of FR2 Friday Evening 2
About This Performance
One of the finest conductor/composers of his generation, Matthias Pintscher brings his composer’s ear to all he conducts. Leading French violinist Renaud Capuçon collaborates with him on Pintscher’s own concerto. The rest of this gorgeous program revisits three great French composers from the turn of the last century.
One of Ravel’s first orchestral works, Rapsodie espagnole drew inspiration from his mother’s homeland and was an immediate success. Also inspired by impressions of Spain is Debussy’s Iberia, which is a triptych within the triptych Images. With its three colorful movements, Iberia has proved the most popular of the Images. For Paul Dukas, nothing has proved more popular than The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which became even more famous after Walt Disney used it to underscore Mickey Mouse’s segment in Fantasia – one of the movie’s most iconic scenes.
